Citizen's asylum has become widely socially accepted for people having to flee from Ukraine. Yet structures of citizens' asylum as an act of civil disobedience have already been existent in Germany since many decades, with the main goal to protect people from deportations and violence in the German asylum system.

First and foremost, migrant communities organise themselves in providing safe and solidary spaces to protect persons from deportation and violence. In Saxony, people in solidarity with persons on the move have also been working on structures to provide citizens' asylum.

We want to sit down together and broaden this network. We want to give information on the practice of citizens' asylum, exchange our experiences, and most of all, we want to come to a conclusion concerning a practice of antiracist citizens' asylum that doesn't remain clandestine anymore.

It is time to stand up against deportations from Leipzig airport and from anywhere else. For us, it is not only about giving shelter, For us, citizens' asylum means fighting for the freedom of movement. We refuse to continue opening our doors silently.

Background: what is citizens' asylum?
Citizens' asylum is a practice that tries to protect people on the move from deportation to their country of origin or to other EU countries. In an act of civil disobedience and through the provision of private housing, parts of civil society oppose the forced return of people in misery or imprisonment, persecution or war.
